---------------------

When did I start becoming interested in writing? It must have been when I was in fourth grade of elementary school. I disliked having the same flower-covered Japonica Gakushucho notebook as everyone else, so I wrote my name on the cover in bubble letters. I don’t remember exactly why I chose bubble letters, but I still vividly recall the feeling of elation when I finished. My name contained many curving letters such as “S” and “M,” and at that time I was obsessed with drawing airy, smooth curves into those shapes. Back then, I didn’t realize that what I was doing was writing. To me, it felt no different from drawing a picture. I had no awareness that there was a broader context behind that simple act.

—I had completely forgotten about writing until I came to Tokyo. But once tags and throw-ups scattered throughout the city began to naturally enter my field of vision, it became almost impossible for my brain to filter them out, and I started taking photographs. It has been nearly four years since I began photographing writing in Tokyo and other cities around the world. The more photographs I take, the more I engage in thought experiments about the cultural aspects of writing and its future. Recently, I have also been attempting to redefine writing itself from multiple perspectives, at the intersection of illegality and artistry inherent in writing culture. In this edition, I would like to introduce a fragment of that ongoing exploration.
